Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of pitch

Following a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had scored only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.
